Muneer Malik is among the most renowned lawyers in Pakistan. He qualified as a Certified Public Accountant in California, US before turning his attention to law and graduating Magna Cum Laude from the University of Santa Clara’s JD programme. He started practice in Karachi in 1976 and has served as Attorney General for Pakistan and been elected, on different occasions, as the President of the Supreme Court Bar Association of Pakistan, the Sindh High Court Bar Association and the Karachi Bar Association respectively. Admired throughout the profession for his clarity of thought and expression, he is frequently appointed as amicus curie by the Supreme Court and High Court to assist on intricate questions of constitutional, civil and commercial law. Malik was part of the team representing former Chief Justice of Pakistan, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, which successfully challenged – before the Supreme Court – Chaudhry’s ouster from judicial office by General Pervez Musharraf. Malik’s commitment to constitutionalism, human rights and democracy in Pakistan has been recognised domestically and internationally. He has been awarded, amongst others, the Dorab Patel Rule of Law award by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, the Human Rights Defender award by the Hong Kong-based Asian Human Rights Commission and the South Korean Gwangju Prize for Human Rights.
